STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT BIDEN SIGNING BIPARTISAN INFRASTRUCTURE DEAL INTO LAW FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  “Today is a historic day for the American people: infrastructure week has finally arrived. Though those before him have promised to act, President Biden delivered. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act isn’t only a win for Americans who are tired of chronic disinvestment and crumbling roads and bridges in their communities, it’s also a win for our democracy. President Biden has made good on his promise to break through gridlock in Washington and work across the aisle to find common ground.

This legislation will deliver a once-in-a-generation investment in growing our economy, rebuilding our roads and bridges, creating good-paying union jobs, and putting America on a path to lead the world in the 21st century. This legislation is truly historic, delivering the largest-ever federal investments in public transit and clean drinking water, in passenger rail since the creation of Amtrak, in bridges since the construction of the highway system, and the creation of universal high-speed internet access for American households. This legislation will bring supply chains and manufacturing back to the U.S. It will ensure clean drinking water for our kids by replacing dangerous lead pipes and make the largest investment in clean energy transmission and electric vehicle infrastructure in American history.

As we celebrate this enormous win for our workers, our families, and our economy, the urgency to get the rest of President Biden’s economic agenda passed only intensifies. It’s critical that the House passes the Build Back Better Act this week to build on these transformational investments with legislation that will lower costs for working people, create good-paying jobs, cut taxes for millions of American families, and make our tax system fairer so that it rewards work and not wealth.”
