STATEMENT ON NASHVILLE SCHOOL SHOOTING FROM BBT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi released the following statement after a school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee reportedly killed three children and three teachers:

“Today’s shooting at The Covenant School is horrifyingly familiar. A generation of children in America have grown up with the constant threat of gun violence. Millions of kids experience regular active shooter drills; hundreds of thousands have survived school shootings; hundreds have been killed in school in the last decade alone. Today’s attack is another devastating loss: three young children and their teachers murdered at school. 

“Hopes and prayers and bulletproof backpacks are not working. Perhaps this shooting will be enough to convince Republicans in Congress to ban assault weapons. For decades, they have refused to act — but maybe today will be enough. For the sake of America’s children, it should be.”
