STATEMENT ON BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION’S FOCUS ON DRIVING DOWN PRICES, STRENGTHENING SUPPLY CHAINS

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi issued the following statement on the Biden-Harris Administration’s work to drive down prices for American families:

“Today’s data shows promising signs, including a meaningful reduction in headline inflation between November and December. This trend aligns with forecasts from leading experts including the OECD and Federal Reserve that project prices will moderate throughout 2022. Also in December, wage gains outstripped price increases, leaving American workers with more money in their pockets, a sign of progress in addition to the strides made to create millions of jobs and bring down unemployment thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration.”

“But President Biden isn’t stopping there. He’s using every tool at his disposal to continue driving down prices for American families. He knows that even a small increase in prices can weigh on a family’s pocketbook, and that’s why he’s taken aggressive action to strengthen our supply chains, take on corporations raking in record profits while charging consumers higher prices, and pass his Build Back Better Act.”

“The Biden-Harris Administration has taken immediate steps, such as implementing a Port Action and Trucking Plan, moving key ports to 24/7 operations, and acting to increase competition in industries like meatpacking to address bottlenecks in our food supply chain that raise the price of groceries. The President has also delivered on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which will drive down prices by strengthening supply chains and bringing them back to the United States. This legislation also improves infrastructure like ports, roads, and bridges that help get goods to the market quickly and reliably, bringing down costs for consumers.”

“And the President isn’t stopping there. Passing the Build Back Better Act will further lower the cost of living for American families by bringing down the cost of health care, elder care, child care, housing, utilities, and more. While the President hasn’t hesitated to roll up his sleeves and get to work for everyday Americans, Congressional Republicans are steadfast in their opposition to this legislation that experts have said is the key to easing inflation – not the cause of it – and are instead treating it as a political football. We’ll continue to call on Congress to swiftly pass this legislation that will build on the Administration’s work so far and continue to lower prices for American families.”
