STATEMENT FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI ON THE SUPREME COURT DECISION IN BRNOVICH

When a state law makes it harder to vote — or harder to have your vote counted — and that law disproportionately impacts Native Americans and other voters of color, it is undemocratic, unfair, and un-American. Our elections must work for all voters — no matter their zip code, race, or party. This is a simple principle, and one that is at the heart of our democratic system.

Today, the Supreme Court once again misinterpreted and undermined the Voting Rights Act. This decision could make it more difficult to successfully challenge laws like these in federal court, but we will push harder than ever for progress on voting rights in Congress, in state legislatures and in the courts until all Americans have equal justice under the law.

Now more than ever, it is time for Congress to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to safeguard the fundamental right to vote. Our work continues with greater urgency to, as President Biden said today, “demand that our democracy truly reflects the will of the people and that it delivers for the Nation.”
