STATEMENT FROM BBT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI ON EXECUTIVE ORDER FROM PRESIDENT BIDEN ADVANCING JUST POLICING AND PUBLIC SAFETY

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After President Biden signed an executive order advancing just policing and public safety, Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi released the following statement:

“This executive order from President Biden is a major action to advance just policing and public safety in America. As we honor the life and legacy of George Floyd today, this executive order by President Biden strives to ensure federal law enforcement agencies are a model of accountability and trust, and pushes for state, local, and Tribal agencies to do the same. The President knows that our communities are safest when we can rebuild trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve by rooting out racism embedded in our criminal justice system.

“While Congressional Republicans voted against the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, denying justice for victims of police misconduct and Black Americans across the country – President Biden is acting. His administration has worked tirelessly to advance solutions to the most pressing issues in our criminal justice system in the months since. Today, President Biden is taking a critical step toward justice in remembrance of Mr. Floyd and other victims of systemic police misconduct.”
