STATEMENT ON AA AND NHPI HERITAGE MONTH FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Interim Executive Director Mayra Macías released the following statement in honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month:

“Today marks the beginning of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which celebrates the significant contributions and rich, diverse cultural traditions of communities that have shaped our nation. From small business owners to caregivers, servicemembers, artists, doctors, and so much more, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders play a defining role in the story of the United States.

“The Biden-Harris Administration has worked from day one to deliver for these communities, including by advocating for greater AA and NHPI representation in government, and distributing nearly $16 billion in loans to AA and NHPI entrepreneurs. President Biden also signed the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act into law to address an unacceptable rise in anti-Asian hate, and has taken action to strengthen gun safety laws in the wake of tragic shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay.

“Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black and South Asian American to hold her office, has overseen a historic number of AA and NHPI nominations since taking office. From the first-ever Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Senior Liaison to the White House, to the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, to nominating Julie Su to become the first Asian-American Secretary of Labor, the Biden-Harris Administration is walking the walk on building a more inclusive nation — starting with an administration that centers AA and NHPI communities.”

Mayra Macías is the Interim Executive Director of Building Back Together, leading the organization’s work alongside partners to educate Americans on the positive impact of the Biden-Harris legislative agenda.
