STATEMENT ON TEXAS COURT SETTING NATIONAL ABORTION BAN IN MOTION FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Interim Executive Director Mayra Macías released the following statement after a Texas district court ruling in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA attempted to strike down access to mifepristone:

“The court’s outrageous decision proves yet again that anti-choice extremists will stop at nothing to ban abortion outright. This decision flies in the face of the needs of patients and the advice of doctors across the country — and will disproportionately hurt communities of color, immigrant communities, and those living in rural areas. The vast majority of Americans oppose this decision, and President Biden and Vice President Harris stand with them.

“Mifepristone has saved lives and assisted with miscarriage management for more than 20 years. This decision is not only an outrageous attack on access to reproductive care, but also poses an existential threat to the FDA’s authority to review and approve a wide range of safe and effective drugs.

“The Department of Justice has already appealed the court’s decision and seeks an immediate stay pending appeal. Mifepristone continues to be available and approved for the time being, and the Biden-Harris Administration will continue to work to protect reproductive rights and to ensure women can make their own decisions about their own bodies.”
