JUDGE JACKSON MOVES ONE STEP CLOSER TO FULL SENATE CONFIRMATION DESPITE UNPRECEDENTED AND OFFENSIVE REPUBLICAN ATTEMPTS TO OBSTRUCT

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After all 11 Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to obstruct the nomination of eminently qualified Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson – several explicitly basing their votes on extreme right wing conspiracies that have been disproven time and time again – Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi released the following statement:

“Today we are another step closer to seeing Judge Jackson, a brilliant legal mind with the utmost character and integrity, join our nation’s highest court. Judge Jackson is incredibly qualified, with  more judicial experience than four current justices had when they were nominated, combined – which makes it all the more offensive that Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee have chosen to play politics with her historic nomination. By forcing the use of a discharge petition, an unprecedented act of obstruction, Senate Republicans have demonstrated yet again that they are more focused on playing to their extreme base than on putting a broadly popular, highly qualified, and exceptional justice on the US Supreme Court.

“Since President Biden announced Judge Jackson’s nomination, the American people have gotten to know her even-handed approach to the law, her inspiring personal story, and theyoverwhelmingly support her confirmation. Judge Jackson’s unimpeachable character and breadth of experience across the legal field clearly qualify her to sit on our nation’s highest court. Her nomination is not only well deserved, but it is a historic and long overdue moment for our country, and we look forward to the upcoming vote to confirm her to our nation’s highest court.”
