CONGRESSIONAL REPUBLICANS OBSTRUCT PRESIDENT’S PLAN TO LOWER COSTS FOR FAMILIES WITH COUNTER-OFFER TO DO NOTHING

President Biden’s Build Back Better Act would lower costs for everyday families by thousands each year, but Senate Republicans prefer to do nothing to bring down costs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After months of obstructing President Biden’s Build Back Better plan to lower costs for everyday families and referring to inflation as a political “goldmine,” this week, Senate Republicans released a proposal of their own. In contrast to the President’s plan – which takes direct and aggressive action to lower the everyday costs families face from health care to child care – the Republican plan boldly offers an alternative approach: doing nothing.

“President Biden is a man of action, especially when it comes to keeping money in the pockets of working and middle class families who work hard everyday to provide for themselves and their families,” said Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi. “That’s why he’s using every tool at his disposal to drive down prices, ease supply chain bottlenecks, and finish the job to pass the Build Back Better Act. This legislation will drive down everyday costs and help families keep more of what they earn. When families are struggling, President Biden knows doing nothing is never an option.”

President Biden has taken unprecedented action to bring costs down for working families, including addressing supply chain challenges to get goods moving to consumers at lower costs, taking on corporate monopolies that are raising prices even as they rake in record profits, and calling on Congress to act with urgency to pass the Build Back Better Act, which will bring down the cost of essentials – from child care to housing to prescription drugs – all while cutting taxes for working and middle class families. The President’s plan has garnered widespread support from economic experts  – including 15 Nobel Laureate Economists. In spite of this, Republicans in Congress are uniformly opposed to the President’s plans to lower costs for families through the Build Back Better Act.
