STATEMENT ON VOTE TO PREVENT GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI

“After Republican gamesmanship that threatened to defund our government, Congress pulled back from the brink of a shutdown today that would have harmed our economic recovery and ability to continue the fight against the pandemic. However, we are quickly approaching another crucial deadline to raise the debt ceiling and prevent a devastating government default that would threaten critical funding for seniors, service members, small business owners and more.”

“Thanks to President Biden’s leadership, we have seen an unprecedented economic recovery that has gotten shots in arms, put Americans back to work, and created millions of jobs. But that progress, and our ability to build back better for every American, is deeply threatened if Republicans in Congress, who voted three times to raise the debt ceiling under President Trump, now refuse to join Democrats to raise the debt ceiling in a bipartisan manner and instead choose to plunge our country into a recession. The time to act is now — not when it may be too late.”
