STATEMENT ON THE PASSAGE OF A CONTINUING RESOLUTION FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER
Washington, D.C. — In response to Congress passing a continuing resolution and avoiding a government shutdown, Building Back Together Deputy Executive Director Javier Gamboa released the following statement:
“Once again, Democrats in Congress have stepped up to prevent a needless government shutdown that would harm families. Despite MAGA Republicans’ reckless disregard for the devastating impact of a shutdown that would threaten food assistance programs like SNAP and undermine crucial services for Veterans – President Biden, Vice President Harris, Majority Leader Schumer, Leader Jeffries and Congressional Democrats remain united in delivering stability for the nation.
“This agreement keeps our government functioning, ensuring essential services remain available for hardworking families and our nation’s security remains intact. While Speaker Johnson and MAGA extremists continue to waste time on partisan distractions, true leadership has remained focused on protecting the American people.
“Unfortunately, Speaker Johnson’s Dear Colleague letter made clear his nakedly political reasons for putting forward this clean extension. Rather than prioritizing the well-being of the American people, he told Republicans in Congress that ‘as history has taught and current polling affirms, shutting the government down less than 40 days from a fateful election would be an act of political malpractice.’ This partisan gamesmanship lays bare exactly where MAGA Republicans’ priorities lie — not with what is good for our country, but with what is good for their election prospects.
“While the continuing resolution ensures our government remains open, the fight to fund our government fully is not over. Americans are tired of the relentless chaos of having a government running on short-term extensions. Our nation deserves consistent stability, not more of this MAGA mayhem.”
