STATEMENT ON TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF DACA FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi released the following statement in recognition of the ten-year anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy:

“For ten years, the Obama-Biden Administration’s DACA program has opened up opportunities for immigrants raised in the United States to work, attend school, and build lives for themselves and future generations in the only home many of them have ever known. DACA opens the door for hundreds of thousands of Dreamers to more fully participate in society, giving them the opportunity to grow and thrive in the United States, and over the last two years, Dreamers have served this country courageously on the frontlines of the COVID pandemic.

“President Biden is committed to signing legislation that will deliver for Black, Latino, and immigrant communities and protect Dreamers, but it is on our representatives in Congress to act on a permanent, legislative solution. At every turn, Republicans in Congress and conservative judges have blocked reforms and fought to undo the progress made under DACA, embracing policies that put the safety of immigrant communities at risk. Dreamers deserve to live, learn, and work without fear of deportation. As we mark a decade of the DACA policy, ten years without a pathway to citizenship is ten years too long.”
