STATEMENT ON SHORT-TERM DEBT CEILING EXTENSION FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI

“The short-term agreement to extend the debt ceiling is a step in the right direction to avert a Republican-induced economic crisis. While this progress will forestall immediate consequences, it will soon once again be time for Republicans in Congress to join Democrats in protecting the full faith and credit of the United States by voting to raise the debt ceiling on a bipartisan basis — as they did multiple times during the previous administration.”

“Republican stonewalling for the sake of partisan games has brought the country to the brink of a crisis of their own making, while Democrats in Congress have been working hard to avert a government default that would have deeply threatened our economic recovery and wiped out as many as 6 million jobs. We urge Republicans to step up to safeguard our economy, or get out of Democrats’ way.”

“In the meantime, Democrats in Congress must continue their work to deliver for the American people who are counting on them to pass the Build Back Better Agenda and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal. Progress on creating millions of good-paying jobs, fixing our broken infrastructure, lowering the cost of everyday essentials, and finally ensuring the wealthiest and large corporations pay their fair share cannot be delayed. With these historic investments, we can truly build back better for working and middle class families in our country.”
