STATEMENT ON SENATE PASSAGE OF RESPECT FOR MARRIAGE ACT FROM BBT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi released the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan bill to protect same-sex marriage:

“Today, the Senate took critical action to ensure that no American is discriminated against because of who they are or who they love. After conservatives on the Supreme Court stripped millions of women of our right to make decisions about our own bodies, the threat to other fundamental rights has become more urgent and more real, making this legislation more critical than ever. The Respect for Marriage Act gives security to LGBTQI+ Americans nationwide, ensuring that their rights are protected under the law in the face of these attacks on our freedoms.

“President Biden has been a strong defender of our fundamental rights, including marriage equality, and stands firm against extremism of all forms. We look forward to the House passing this bill and sending it to President Biden’s desk for his signature.”
