STATEMENT ON SENATE PASSAGE OF BIPARTISAN BUDGET AGREEMENT FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Interim Executive Director Mayra Macías released the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed the Bipartisan Budget Agreement, teeing it up for President Biden’s signature:

“After months of House Republican hostage-taking, today is a much-needed victory for Americans. With tonight’s passage of President Biden’s Bipartisan Budget Agreement in the Senate, the integrity of the American financial system and the key programs working families rely on remain intact.

“As the president has repeatedly said, this deal does not have everything we would have wanted: it is a compromise. But from where we started — Congressional Republicans’ demands to slash funding for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid — to where we ended — President Biden beating back $130 billion dollars of devastating House Republican cuts to programs families rely on — this agreement is a victory for the American people.

“This outcome was anything but assured, and it is thanks to the leadership of President Biden, Leader Jeffries, Leader Schumer and allies in Congress that our economic system remains intact. Social Security checks will continue to go out on time, Medicaid and Medicare are completely protected, and our nation’s heroes and veterans will continue to have the health care they deserve.

“We applaud President Biden for striking this critical deal for middle class people, and for ensuring that instead of facing a MAGA default, our nation will continue to build on the economic progress from the last two years.”
