STATEMENT ON PASSAGE OF OMNIBUS BILL INCLUDING MAJOR VOTING RIGHTS REFORM FROM BBT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi released the following statement after the U.S. House and Senate passed an omnibus spending package which includes the Electoral Count Act:

“This bipartisan legislation, a product of compromise, delivers funding for President Biden’s key priorities – including cancer research, community safety, veterans services, health care, child care and education, and natural disaster recovery – and ensures our government is able to address the needs of working families in the year to come. It also includes essential funding to support Ukraine and provisions to secure and defend our elections.

“By including and supporting the Electoral Count Act in this bill, legislators on both sides of the aisle have taken a stand for our democracy and in defense of voters across the country. With extreme threats to our elections on the rise, it has never been more critical to address outdated laws and close loopholes that could put our nation’s free and fair elections at risk. President Biden remains committed to working across the aisle to deliver these and other wins for the American people, and we look forward to seeing him sign this legislation into law.”
