STATEMENT ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION REFORM ACT FROM BBT VOTING RIGHTS DIRECTOR RUBÉN LEBRÓN

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Voting Rights Director Rubén Lebrón released the following statement after the U.S. House passed the bipartisan Presidential Election Reform Act, which clarifies the role of the vice president in the counting of electoral votes and ensures states cannot retroactively change electors after an election:

“The Presidential Election Reform Act takes essential steps to defend our elections and fix vulnerabilities in our system. It reaffirms that no one person, not even a president, is above the power of our democracy in the United States. The result of our elections must always be determined by the will of the people – not by exploiting loopholes in outdated election laws. With this vote, representatives from both parties acted to protect American democracy and the voice of the American voter.

“Building Back Together is committed to defending voting rights nationwide, including through our Language Justice Committee, to increase access to the ballot box for all Americans and ensure the will of the people is heard and respected. We urge Congress to send legislation to safeguard the integrity of our elections to President Biden’s desk for his signature.”
