STATEMENT ON DEBT CEILING DEAL FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Interim Executive Director Mayra Macías released the following statement after the White House and Congressional leadership announced they had reached a debt ceiling deal to avert an unprecedented default:

“Thanks to President Biden, Americans are able to take a massive sigh of relief knowing that the full faith and credit of the United States remains intact. Because of the Biden-Harris Administration — and the advocacy of Leader Jeffries and allies in Congress — Social Security checks will go out on time; military veterans, who risked their lives for our nation, will get the benefits they deserve; and our nation’s most vulnerable will continue to have access to the health care they need.

“To say this bipartisan deal was brokered under the most difficult circumstances possible would be an understatement. At each and every turn, Republicans in Congress failed to do the duty assigned by the Constitution and were willing to risk a catastrophic default and unprecedented recession over demands to gut programs Americans rely on the most in order to protect tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations.

“We applaud President Biden’s successful brokering of a debt ceiling deal that protects job growth, sacred earned benefits like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and ensures that our nation will continue to see the massive gains we’ve made under the Biden-Harris’ economic agenda. Now, Congress must pass this bill so President Biden can sign it into law expediently.
