STATEMENT ON ANNIVERSARY OF JAN. 6TH INSURRECTION FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI

“A year ago, insurrectionists launched a deadly assault on our nation’s Capitol, its police officers, and the elected representatives gathered to ensure the peaceful transfer of power central to our democracy. Today, we honor the brave men and women who fought to uphold our Constitution over the course of hours of violence, and in particular remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the line of duty.”

“That dark day last January showed how fragile our democracy can be, and how the work to defend and strengthen it is far from finished. This work requires all of us to stand up to the hate and extremism that fueled this insurrection, and it requires all of us to come together to restore the sense of unity, decency, and respect that allows our democracy to endure. But it also requires action from Congress to protect the foundation of our country and government: free and fair elections.”

“President Biden and Vice President Harris have made it clear that protecting Americans’ fundamental right to vote is an urgent priority, especially in the face of continued efforts to undermine access to and faith in our democracy. It’s time for leaders in Congress to pass critical legislation like the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.”

“We’re proud to work with a broad coalition of advocates to support systematic democracy reforms. We call on our leaders in Washington to do what is necessary to protect Americans’ fundamental right to vote. This is the true test of our democracy – to prove whether our not our government can deliver for the people. Failing to meet this test is not an option.”
