STATEMENT FROM BUILDING BACK TOGETHER TWO YEARS AFTER THE SUPREME COURT’S DISASTROUS DOBBS DECISION
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Mayra Macías, Building Back Together Executive Director and a Planned Parenthood Action Fund Board Member, released the following statement marking two years since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade:
“Two years ago in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, an ultra-conservative majority on the Supreme Court overturned the landmark Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade — creating space for MAGA Republicans to launch their attacks on the reproductive rights of our nation’s hardworking families. Since Roe was overturned, these extremist politicians have enacted near-total abortion bans or allowed archaic ‘zombie’ laws to come into effect in 21 states, forcing people either to travel to another state for abortion care or risk their own health, all while threatening women and doctors with jail time for receiving and providing this necessary health care. Put simply, this state of affairs is unacceptable and goes counter to our American values.
“Our nation is stronger than these unpopular attacks on health care, and we are grateful to the Biden-Harris Administration for continuing to fight to protect and expand access to reproductive health care — including protecting access to mifepristone, approving the first over-the-counter birth control pill and countering attacks on IVF and contraception from MAGA extremists. But more progress still needs to be made — Congress must act now to codify Roe in order to protect hardworking families and secure their ability to decide for themselves when and how they choose to start a family.”
