STATEMENT FROM BBT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI ON THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF GEORGE FLOYD’S MURDER

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi released the following statement marking the second anniversary of the murder of George Floyd:

“Today, two years after the senseless murder of George Floyd, we remember his life, grieve for his family and community, and resolve to continue taking action to prevent future hate-fueled tragedies. In the years since Mr. Floyd’s death, we have witnessed far too many similar acts of racist violence that have left countless other families grieving the loss of loved ones. We know that there is still much more to be done to reform policing and our criminal justice system, and to combat the dangerous, hateful ideologies that have spurred violence and death in our communities.

“As we look to the essential work ahead, President Biden is committed to addressing these important systemic challenges – including by signing an executive order later today to advance just policing and public safety in America. We can and we must do better to honor Mr. Floyd’s life and legacy, and to create a safer, more equitable world for his daughter and for generations of Black Americans to come. As President Biden has said many times: hate must have no safe harbor in America.”
