STATEMENT FROM BBT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI ON SWEARING-IN OF JUSTICE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi released the following statement following the swearing-in of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, President Biden’s nominee to the Supreme Court:

“We are witnessing history today as President Biden’s nominee, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, becomes the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court. This is a joyous moment, made possible by decades of activism and advocacy on the part of Black women-led organizations who have fought to ensure our nation’s highest Court, and all courts, look more like America. The vast majority of Americans support Justice Jackson as she joins the Court – and their trust has never been more important as the American people’s confidence in this Court is shaken in the wake of recent decisions at odds both with Constitutional precedent and the priorities of most Americans.

“Justice Jackson’s career has been defined by her steadfast commitment to equal rights and justice under the law – and her leadership in the years to come will no doubt reflect this dedication. We look forward to seeing her serve as a justice of the people as she continues to make history.”
