STATEMENT FROM BBT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI ON SUPREME COURT DECISION IN WEST VIRGINIA V. EPA

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling today that undermines the authority of the EPA to limit climate pollution, Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi released the following statement:

“This irresponsible decision from the Supreme Court weakens the power of the EPA at a moment when we need their leadership more than ever. We are experiencing an unprecedented climate crisis that, just this month, has fueled deadly wildfires in New Mexico, catastrophic flooding in Yellowstone, and record heat waves across the country. Lives are at stake. The cost of inaction has never been higher – and limiting our ability to set strong pollution standards is inexcusable.

“As with so many decisions from conservatives on the Court this term, today’s ruling is out of step with the priorities and needs of the American people, who are demanding action to protect our communities from climate disasters. President Biden has taken significant steps to protect our environment — including rejoining the Paris Climate Accord, investing in America’s clean energy future, and restoring strong pollution standards after the previous administration consistently weakened them — and he will build on this progress despite today’s decision. While the extreme MAGA agenda continues to deny climate change, President Biden remains committed to tackling this issue to prevent future natural disasters and protect our communities, and he urges Congress to act swiftly as well.”
