STATEMENT FROM BBT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANIELLE MELFI ON SENATE PASSAGE OF BIPARTISAN CHIPS AND SCIENCE LEGISLATION

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After the U.S. Senate passed legislation to boost American semiconductor production, lower prices for consumers, create union jobs, strengthen domestic supply chains, and make us more competitive with China, Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi released the following statement:

“President Biden is using every tool at his disposal to revitalize American manufacturing, bring supply chains back to the United States, and lower costs for consumers. Under his leadership, we’ve seen significant economic progress, including more manufacturing jobs created on average per month in his first year in office than any other president in the last 50 years.

“The Senate’s passage of the CHIPS and Science Act takes us an important step closer to building on this progress. The legislation’s investments to strengthen American semiconductor manufacturing will help bring down prices for working families, create good-paying union jobs, and increase our competitiveness with China. As semiconductor production slowed during the pandemic, prices increased for consumers and manufacturers considered relocating overseas. Funding in this legislation tackles these concerns head-on, delivering incentives and resources for American companies to produce semiconductors right here in America.

“Semiconductors power everything from cars to computers to refrigerators, meaning working families will feel the impact of this legislation throughout their daily lives. The CHIPS and Science Act, a key element of President Biden’s cost-cutting agenda, delivers for consumers, supports manufacturers, and will make our economy stronger and more resilient for years to come.”
