ICYMI: NEW RESEARCH SHOWS STRONG SUPPORT FOR MAKING WEALTHIEST PAY FAIR SHARE, CHILD TAX CREDIT AMONG BOTH BIDEN AND TRUMP VOTERS
Reflects quantitative research that also highlights overwhelming support for key economic provisions in Build Back Better Agenda
Washington, D.C. — Today, a new report from Navigator Research highlights the popularity of two provisions of the Build Back Better Agenda: finally ensuring the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share, and lowering costs for everyday families by continuing the expansion of the Child Tax Credit. The focus groups, conducted with mothers and educators in Florida, Texas, and Nevada from both sides of the aisle, showed support for these planks of President Biden’s economic agenda that center working and middle class families.
Respondents across the board — including Americans who voted for Trump — expressed support for increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans. Participants also criticized elected officials who opposed taxing the wealthiest Americans and the expanded Child Tax Credit as out of touch, and said they were prepared to reject elected officials who opposed these provisions.
The report’s findings echo public polling that highlights the broad bipartisan support for these provisions — including earlier data from Navigator Research that showed 72 percent of Americans supported raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans, and 64 percent of Americans supported expanding and making the Child Tax Credit permanent.
Key quotes from focus group participants:
- On the current tax system: “I feel like the blue-collar worker, like us teachers, we give so much in taxes, and I feel like a lot of those wealthy business owners, there’s just so many loopholes.” – TX, Trump voter
- On the Child Tax Credit: “Well, it literally pays my rent. I literally only have to pay like $50 towards my rent every month. So I only have to worry about my other bills, which is helpful when a job only brings in $400 a check or $500 a check. So that really helps.” – NV, Biden voter
- On candidates who opposed these policies: “[I’d assume] that he’s in that bracket. That he’s thinking about himself and those other people in his social circle.” – TX, Trump voter
