ICYMI: NEW RESEARCH SHOWS BUILD BACK BETTER ACT IS HUGELY POPULAR, WILL SAVE FAMILIES THOUSANDS

Majority of Americans support the Build Back Better Act and want it signed into law by the end of the year

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the non-partisan think tank Third Way released new research showing that four key provisions of President Biden’s Build Back Better Act — expanding the Child Tax Credit, capping the cost of child care, expanding the Affordable Care Act, and closing the Medicaid coverage gap — will save the average family of four up to $7,400 a year in tax cuts and lower costs. The research also found that the typical single mother of two would save up to $15,000 a year.

This research comes on the heels of new polling published by Data for Progress in partnership with Invest in America that underscores the enduring popularity of the Build Back Better Act, with the legislation receiving support from three in five Americans and a strong majority of Americans believing that it is “important” that the legislation is signed into law in 2021.

New research from the non-partisan think tank Third Way finds that key components of the Build Back Better Act will save everyday families thousands of dollars a year:

  • “Democrats’ Build Back Better Act includes a series of tax cuts and cost protections that will have an outsized effect on working and middle-income families with children.”
  • “We found that a two-parent family of four would get a tax cut and have lower costs of up to $7,400 from these four provisions when fully phased in. A single mother with two kids would get a tax cut and have lower costs of as much as $15,000.”
  • “Not included in this calculation are the benefits families could receive such as universal Pre-K if they had a 3- or 4-year-old child, new housing subsidies, or SNAP benefits, among many others. Also not included in our analysis is that workers with no children may also benefit from a higher Earned Income Tax Credit.”

New polling from Data for Progress and Invest in America underscores the popularity of the Build Back Better Act:

  • 60% of Americans support the Build Back Better Act when given a brief description of the legislation.
  • 61% of Americans support the Build Back Better Act when given a brief description of how the legislation will be paid for.
  • 55% of Americans think it is important that the Build Back Better Act is signed into law by the end of 2021.
  • The individual components of the Build Back Better Act are also popular:
    • 75% of Americans support improving the quality and accessibility of long-term care for seniors and people with disabilities.
    • 71% of Americans support expanding Medicare coverage to provide hearing coverage.
    • 59% of Americans support guaranteeing four weeks of paid family and medical leave for workers.
    • 58% of Americans support the expanded use of clean energy.
    • 57% of Americans support a universal pre-K program.
    • 55% of Americans support extending the Earned Income Tax Credit.
    • 53% of Americans support ensuring parents don’t spend more than 7% of their income on child care.
