ICYMI: NEW NAVIGATOR POLL HIGHLIGHTS POPULARITY OF FREEDOM TO VOTE ACT, JOHN LEWIS VOTING RIGHTS ADVANCEMENT ACT

Americans across party lines believe that the protections afforded under the 1965 Voting Rights Act continue to be needed today

WASHINGTON, D.C. — New polling from Navigator Research emphasizes the broad popularity of both the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, with over 60 percent of Americans supporting both pieces of legislation. This support is underscored by the widespread belief among the American people that the 1965 Voting Rights Act is still needed today to protect Americans from racial discrimination in voting.

“The message from the American people is clear — the freedom to vote is a sacred right that we must continue to protect and strengthen,” said Building Back Together Executive Director Danielle Melfi. “That’s why we’ve launched the Language Justice Committee to tackle barriers that remain at the ballot box, and why we’ll continue to advocate for both the restoration of the 1965 Voting Rights Act through passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the strengthening of the freedom to vote and our democracy through the Freedom to Vote Act.”

Key highlights from the Navigator poll:

  • 61% of Americans support the Freedom to Vote Act.
  • 67% of Americans — including 83% of Democrats, 63% of Independents, and 48% of Republicans — believe that the 1965 Voting Rights Act that was passed to end racial discrimination in voting is still needed today.
  • 69% of Americans — including 88% of Democrats, 60% of Independents, and 50% of Republicans — support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
