BUILDING BACK TOGETHER CELEBRATES JUNETEENTH

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Building Back Together’s Executive Director Mayra Macías issued the following statement in celebration of Juneteenth:

“Today, we honor the spirit of freedom and renew our commitment to addressing the legacy of slavery and systemic racism in our country. Black history is American history, and by confronting our past, we become stronger as a nation. We offer our deepest gratitude to the Black abolitionists, leaders, educators, civil rights advocates and hardworking Americans who fought to hold our country accountable to our collective vision: a nation where everyone is free to live and work without fear of prejudice or discrimination.

We are grateful for the progress made by the Biden-Harris Administration, from establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021 to taking significant action to address systemic racism — including more lifetime appointments of Black judges than any other president in a single term, passing the most significant gun safety law in nearly 30 years, more than doubling Black small business ownership, providing student debt relief, working to remove medical debt from credit reports that will significantly impact Black loan borrowers and more. As we commemorate Juneteenth, we acknowledge that more work remains to realize our ideals of liberty and justice for all and look forward to continuing to work with the Biden-Harris Administration to make America more equitable for Black Americans.
