BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION REACHES MILESTONE BY CANCELING STUDENT DEBT FOR MORE THAN 1 MILLION PUBLIC WORKERS

The Biden-Harris Administration has delivered vital relief to over 1 million public servants through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, reaffirming their commitment to providing student debt relief

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, the Biden-Harris Administration announced a significant milestone in President Biden and Vice President Harris’ work to relieve the burden of student loan debt for public servants with the announcement of officially discharging 1 million loans through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. In celebration, Building Back Together Director of State Partnerships, Bart Rutherford, released the following statement:

“President Biden and Vice President Harris have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to alleviating the financial burdens felt by millions of Americans pursuing public service careers. With over 1 million recipients benefiting from the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, including 60,000 new discharges, this administration is giving educators, health care professionals, first responders, municipal workers and countless others the freedom to continue serving their communities without being trapped under the crippling weight of student loans.

“Public service should never come at the cost of financial security. When President Biden first took office, only 7,000 public service workers had ever received debt relief through PSLF. Thanks to the leadership of the president and vice president, the program has been repaired, now providing over 1 million public servants with the opportunity to start anew – whether it’s buying a home, investing in their family’s future, or simply setting aside savings to relieve financial stress.

This achievement stands in stark contrast to MAGA Republicans’ Project 2025, which would eliminate the program, denying 3.6 million public servants the relief they have earned and leaving them with $250 billion in additional debt. These ideological attacks threaten not only the livelihoods of hard working Americans, but also the institutions and communities that rely on public service workers every day.

“President Biden and Vice President Harris prove every day that they are fighting for working people. They understand that an education should be a stepping stone to a better future — not a barrier. At BBT, we will continue to support President Biden and Vice President Harris as they work to deliver relief, create successful career paths for public servants and ensure that programs like PSLF remain in place for the future.”
